Intermediate Classes (ages 9 & 10)

Further developing the technical, improvisational and choreographic skills of the 9-10-year-olds we offer classes in contemporary technique, improvisation and choreography, modern jazz , ballet and hip hop as well as a rich opportunity to be involved in a youth dance company that performs several times per year. Students are expected to train at least two days per week if they wish to be involved in the company.

Intermediate Contemporary Technique

Contemporary classes will be rooted in a classical ballet vocabulary with a strong emphasis on torso articulation & expression. These classes will encourage alignment, form, coordination, musicality, strength, rhythm & kinetic intelligence. Live percussion accompanies each class.

Intermediate Improvisation/Composition

Students will explore improvisation and choreography. The Fall term is experimental and process-oriented, and will encourage students to take physical and creative risks through improvisation. In the winter term, students will have the opportunity to work on dance pieces that they will create and that will be created on them. All students in this class also take Contemporary Technique, which immediately precedes this class and acts as an essential warm-up and grounding in precision.

Mixed Level/Late Entry Contemporary Technique & Improvisation (ages 9-19)

The mixed level class is ideal for any student who has not danced before but is looking to start, or who has had an absence from dance and wants to return. You're never to old to start! This class is also ideal for those who would like additional basic training.

Intermediate/Senior Jazz (ages 9-12)

As an extension of their contemporary training, dancers are introduced to different syncopated rhythms and movement qualities. They learn to identify, repeat and mark new rhythms before embarking on the creation of personal movement phrases. Following a balanced conditioning warm up, funky combinations full of traveling steps, kicks, spins and isolations make this class both challenging and fun!

Hip Hop (ages 10-19)

This class focuses on short dance sequences that will help develop a good foundation. All classes will include stretching, technique and choreography development. Taught by Mark Zilio

Breakdancing (ages 10-19)

This class will focus on free-styling and movement in levels, including floorwork and toprocking. Taught by Ryan Antooa
