The Guelph Youth Dance Company offers dedicated young dancers aged 9 to 19 the chance to work with professional choreographers and perform regularly throughout the year. This enriching experience is perfect for aspiring dancers considering a career in dance or for those who enjoy the rigour, discipline and joy that being in a youth dance company can provide.
About Guelph Youth Dance Company
Founded in 2008 by Janet Johnson and Catrina von Radecki, the GYD Company celebrates the talent and creativity of young dancers. Now entering its 16th year, the company features a diverse group of strong, ambitious dancers who perform throughout Guelph including at the Guelph Dance Festival, nationally including to cities like Nova Scotia, Toronto, and Ottawa, and has enjoyed international experiences in China and Spain.

Community Collaborations
We are excited to foster partnerships with local youth organizations such as the Suzuki String School (Guelph), Carousel Dance (Waterloo), The School of Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, York University’s Dance Department, and the Dance Art’s Institute (formerly Toronto Dance Theatre).
Three levels of companies: GYD Company, Young Company and Apprentice Company
The Company experience for dancers 14 and up, includes full year (September-May) comprehensive training, with classes in ballet, contemporary and conditioning once per week and company rehearsals twice per week. Company members must also attend the summer intensive where they prepare a piece that will be performed during the upcoming season.
Apprentice and Young Company
The Apprentice Company is designed for aspiring dancers aged 9-11, while the Young Company caters to those aged 12-13, ensuring that every young dancer has the opportunity to grow and succeed. Mandatory classes for the Apprentice and Young Company members includes weekly ballet, contemporary and company rehearsal.
Audition Information
To join one of the GYD dance companies, aspiring dancers must complete an audition. Auditions are typically held in May. For detailed information about the audition process, including dates and requirements, please click here.
