About Guelph Youth Dance Companies
The Guelph Youth Dance Companies (GYD) provide dedicated dancers aged 9-19 the chance to work with professional choreographers and perform throughout the year. The experience is both inspiring and challenging, perfect for young dancers aspiring to pursue a career in dance or those interested in the rigour, experiences and joy being in one of the companies provide.
Understanding the GYD Company Selection Process
There are specific expectations for dancers auditioning for the Apprentice, Young Company, or Guelph Youth Dance Company:
Apprentice Company
The Apprentice audition offers young dancers their first opportunity to be evaluated in a supportive environment. Feeling nervous is natural, but we strive to make this a positive experience. We look for dancers who show commitment and enthusiasm, as auditions help us identify those ready for the challenges ahead. If there are any concerns regarding attendance or discipline, we will communicate before the audition.
Young Company
This is a step up from the Apprentice Company with increased expectations. Dancers must have at least two years of previous dance experience. We seek those who demonstrate commitment, excellent attendance, and support for their peers. Some may be required to take additional classes, such as conditioning or ballet, to qualify for the Young Company.
GYD Company
The Guelph Youth Company emphasizes excellence and professionalism. Dancers in this company may have opportunities to tour nationally and in some cases internationally as well as to work with guest artists. Acceptance is based on a dancer’s training, commitment, punctuality, and attendance. Dancers may be asked to undergo extra training or serve as an understudy.
Audition Process
A guest teacher will lead a contemporary technique class during auditions. Company Director Tara Butler and Studio Director Kelly Steadman will observe and evaluate each dancer. Although they may know the dancers, this is the first time they see them alongside potential company members. Acceptance decisions are made collectively by the teachers after careful discussion. We hope that all dancers view our decisions as motivation to continue working hard and to identify specific skills they can improve.
Role of the Understudy
While we expect commitment from all dancers, there may be unavoidable absences. Understudies are essential, stepping in when a dancer cannot attend. This role allows for additional training and a comprehensive understanding of the choreography.
Understudy Responsibilities:
- Support the choreographer and production.
- Learn movement material and document notes during rehearsals.
- Meet with dancers outside of regular rehearsal times to grasp choreography.
- Work closely with the Rehearsal Assistant to master parts.
Note: The understudy role is applicable only during company rehearsals, not during regular classes (ballet, contemporary, jazz, etc.).
